Will Massage Therapy Help Me?

There are many benefits of massage therapy - is it right for your issue?

Massage therapy is an excellent alternative treatment to surgery and medications. Additionally, in most cases the benefits of massage are noticeably better than either of those traditional approaches according to the newest research.

According to the Mayo Clinic article on Stress Management:

Massage is generally considered part of complementary and alternative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.

Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension. Some studies have found massage may also be helpful for:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Headaches
  • Temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ)
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Anxiety

Our team has extensive experience with each of the above issues as well as a host of others. Book an appointment today and start feeling the benefits of massage without surgery or medications!

FAQ's

Bodyworks DW therapists have been very successful in helping clients to overcome the following issues:

Other benefits of massage that we can help you with are:

  • relieving anxiety and depression

  • lessening pain due to osteoarthritis

  • reducing insomnia

  • lowering stress

With 1-3 sessions of focused massage therapy, most clients get the benefits of massage very quickly. The average person usually needs between 5-8 sessions to gain long term freedom from pain. The number of sessions needed depends on the severity and length of time that you have been dealing with the issue.

* Please note that while we are committed to providing the highest level of massage therapy available, and we have a high rate of success working with pain issues, we cannot guarantee results and your results may vary. In some cases, pain may increase before it gets better due to unmasking underlying issues. Your pain may stem from issues not related to the musculoskeletal system and may require working with other professionals such as orthopedists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists, neurologists, etc in order to see improvement. If our massage therapy is not producing noticeable results within the first few sessions, we will refer you to other professionals in our network.

The time between sessions is another factor. Multiple sessions have a cumulative effect if done close together. You will get more out of 5 sessions spread out over 5 weeks, with a 3-4 month break afterward, than out of 5 sessions spread out over 5 months.  Our sessions progress to deeper body layers and to related muscle groups when we can see you again within 1-2 weeks. With longer than 2 weeks between sessions, some work will need to be repeated. And it will likely take more total sessions to solve the issue. Once you are out of the pain cycle, regular maintenance sessions once every 4-6 weeks will keep you feeling pain free.

Yes! All NYS licensed massage therapists are required to learn basic prenatal massage. In addition, all Bodyworks DW massage therapists have additional advanced training on how to effectively treat pregnancy related pain issues directly from owner David Weintraub. Make sure to book your session as a "Prenatal Massage" in the drop down menu on our website's booking page, or specify you are interested in prenatal massage when booking with our front desk to see which therapists are available.

New York State law does not allow licensed massage therapists to bill or deal with insurance companies directly. So you will need to pay for any sessions (click here for rates) in full at our studio. However, upon request, we can provide you with a receipt stating that you’ve received medical massage at our studio. This receipt can be submitted to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider to find out if reimbursement is possible with your plan.

Disclaimer: Bodyworks DW is not responsible for the reimbursement decisions of our clients' personal health insurance providers. Unfortunately, despite the known benefits of massage, most insurance companies do not include medical massage coverage. Since Bodyworks DW cannot accept insurance directly and does not receive insurance payouts we will not be able to provide more than a medical receipt. We cannot call, fax, or email insurance companies or provide additional documentation/information to help our clients obtain reimbursement.

Bodyworks DW accepts HSA and FSA spending cards that have a major credit card logo (Visa, MasterCard, etc). To be sure that massage therapy is covered please contact your provider.

We always work within an individual client’s own threshold for intensity. We encourage clients to communicate freely about their comfort and/or pain with deeper work. Breathing through particularly intense work usually helps. However, the client always has final say for how deeply we work and we are happy to work at a lighter level.

In addition, some clients have been led to believe that working as deeply as they can possibly handle will give the most benefits of massage. In reality, working at a slightly intense but comfortable level (that doesn’t cause the client to tense other parts of their body) is generally the most productive.

If you are used to thinking of massage as a luxury spa session, then it may seem expensive. The medical massage work we do is very different from standard luxury massage and has long term lasting effects. It is often the healthiest, least expensive, and least stressful way to deal with chronic pain especially when compared to pain medication and/or surgery.

After we finish the intake section of a session, your therapist will leave the room and allow you to undress and get onto the table and under the sheet and blanket in privacy. Only the body part being worked on is undraped and privates are always covered as required by state law. We encourage all clients to get used to receiving massage without clothing, especially if they have low back or hip problems, which requires work directly on the hips, gluteals, and pelvis.

However, not everyone is comfortable without the protective barrier of underwear, and clients can leave underwear and other clothing on at their discretion. Our therapists can use different techniques and work through clothing if needed.
