Why TMJ Massage?

The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. Tension here can trigger a wide range of symptoms:

  • Jaw pain or clicking
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck and shoulder tightness
  • Earaches or ringing in the ears
  • Tooth pain not explained by dental exams

Massage therapy offers a safe, effective, and non-invasive way to reduce jaw muscle tension, restore mobility, and relieve related pain.

Our Expertise in TMJ Work

  • Advanced Training: David Weintraub, LMT and founder of Bodyworks DW, teaches a 2-day advanced training on the head, neck, and jaw for NYS licensed massage therapists. This training includes specialized intraoral techniques for the pterygoid and buccinator muscles.
  • Skilled Staff: David personally trains our therapists in these techniques. Most of our team are skilled at both external and intraoral TMJ massage.
  • Trusted by Dentists: Many NYC dentists refer their patients to us for conservative care before more invasive options.
  • Proven Results: We’ve helped countless clients reduce or even eliminate their reliance on night guards.

What to Expect

A TMJ massage session may include:

  • External work on the jaw, temples, neck, and shoulders, as well as ribcage, diaphragm, psoas, and hip flexors — areas that often contribute to jaw tension
  • Intraoral techniques (with non-latex medical gloves) to release pterygoid and buccinator muscles with client consent. This treatment is highly recommended but is not required.
  • Myofascial release to improve jaw mobility
  • Trigger point therapy to reduce referred pain
  • Education on self-care and posture to prevent recurrence
  • A follow-up plan addressing related areas of the body — hips, knees, even feet — that are often overlooked but can play a role in jaw pain patterns

Every session is tailored to your pain pattern, history, and comfort level.
