Prenatal Massage NYC – Expert Pain Relief for Expecting Moms

Pregnancy can be joyful — and also physically demanding. Back pain, hip tension, swelling, and restless sleep are all common challenges. At Bodyworks DW, our Prenatal Massage NYC sessions are designed to provide safe, effective relief so you can move through pregnancy with greater comfort and ease.

Unlike many spas that treat prenatal massage as “light pampering,” our licensed therapists specialize in deep tissue and medical massage techniques adapted specifically for pregnancy. Every session is customized to meet your needs, whether that’s easing sciatic pain, reducing swelling, or helping you finally get a good night’s sleep.

What to Expect

Your therapist will begin with a thoughtful intake, asking about your pregnancy stage, comfort levels, and specific areas of concern. Sessions are typically 60 or 90 minutes and use side-lying or semi-reclined positioning with supportive bolsters for maximum comfort.

Every massage is adjusted to your needs. Some clients come for targeted work on back or hip pain, while others prefer a full-body session that balances relief and relaxation. Either way, our goal is for you to leave feeling lighter, calmer, and more comfortable in your body.

What Our Clients Say

“Highly Recommended!” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I attribute my easy pregnancy to David’s work. David’s efforts prevented many aches and problems that typically accompany a pregnancy. I’d originally come to David a few years prior with a severe sciatic nerve pain, which he fixed, and it was fine throughout all the nine months. As a result of David’s work, I was able to enjoy my pregnancy. I highly recommend him as a therapist!

“I Feel Like a New Person” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have been working with Bodyworks since the 2010 marathon. David helped me profoundly with my running recovery and adjusting my running form. This is not massage experience for lightweights—he is going to work you over, and it may hurt badly while he’s working on you, but afterwards you will feel like a new person.

I became pregnant this year, and I’ve found the experience incredibly uncomfortable, so I scheduled an appointment with Shiho for a prenatal massage. This was one of the BEST decisions I have made. My body was immediately more comfortable, and the effects lasted for about 14 days. I am really looking forward to my next prenatal massage with Shiho. I think with her help, I can be a much less miserable pregnant lady.

“Have Sent Many Friends to Him” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
David has worked with me post-partum for two pregnancies and in between. He has worked with my back pain, knee pain and neck pain. If he is unable to relieve the pain, he will assess it and give a recommendation for additional work from another care provider (chiropractic, PT, etc.). He is excellent at listening to the various things that may have caused the pain and gives great exercises to follow up the work that he has done to manage it. I have sent many people to him. David…relieving the stress of New Yorkers, one person at a time.

Prenatal Massage FAQs (Click to open each)

How do I know if I should get a prenatal massage?

If you’re in generally good health and your OB-GYN is comfortable with you doing light/moderate exercise, you can usually receive prenatal massage in any trimester with a trained therapist. Always check with your provider if you have questions.

Talk to your OB-GYN before booking if you are experiencing or have a history of:

  • Persistent nausea/vomiting or severe morning sickness
  • High-risk pregnancy factors (e.g., preeclampsia, placenta previa/abruption, preterm labor)
  • Uncontrolled hypertension, significant swelling, or suspected DVT/blood clot
  • Recent complications, bleeding, or any provider-advised restrictions
Is prenatal massage safe during the first trimester?

Yes. Massage can be provided safely in the first trimester for many clients who are otherwise healthy and able to maintain normal activities. Recent guidance supports massage throughout pregnancy when appropriately adapted—similar in impact to moderate exercise. That said, early pregnancy can include nausea/fatigue and some providers prefer caution, so check in with your OB-GYN if you have concerns or risk factors.

At Bodyworks DW, we individualize sessions and adjust techniques, pressure, and positioning based on your trimester and comfort.

Is deep tissue safe during pregnancy?

Therapeutic pressure can be used safely in pregnancy when it’s tailored to you. We avoid high-risk areas/techniques and keep open communication about pressure using a 1–10 scale. Many clients prefer comfortable, firm work to relieve hips, back, and shoulders—without drifting into painful intensity.

Your therapist will calibrate pressure to your tolerance and stage of pregnancy, and will not use contraindicated techniques. For example, we avoid direct deep work on ligaments, which naturally soften during pregnancy due to relaxin. Deep work on softened ligaments can destabilize joints and is best avoided during pregnancy and for several months postpartum. Deep work on muscles, however, is appropriate for most prenatal clients and often very helpful.

Will there be a massage table with a cut-out?

We don’t use cut-out “pregnancy tables,” as they can increase abdominal pressure and are not universally recommended—especially later in pregnancy. Instead, we position you in supported side-lying or semi-reclined setups with bolsters and pillows. This method is safe, comfortable, and works well throughout pregnancy.
