Causes
What’s Going On With Neck Pain?
- Neck pain affects 30–50% of adults each year, and about half of those cases become recurrent or chronic (Physio-Pedia, 2023; Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2015).
- Poor posture, computer and phone use, and tension in the shoulders, jaw, and upper back are common contributors. Stress often amplifies the tension.
- Past injuries—including whiplash, shoulder dysfunction, or jaw clenching—can alter how the cervical spine supports the head.
- Older injuries in the ankles, knees, or hips can create long-term compensation patterns that eventually show up as neck pain.
At Bodyworks DW, we see neck pain as part of a larger movement and postural pattern. Our therapists use the same integrated techniques taught in our Head, Neck & Jaw CEU course, restoring balance across the neck, shoulders, ribs, and jaw so you can move comfortably again.

How we treat
How Bodyworks DW Treats Neck Pain

The neck connects directly to the shoulders, ribcage, and jaw—imbalances in any of these areas can contribute to pain and stiffness. Anatomy Plate (Gray’s, 1918)
Whole-Body Evaluation
We start by assessing how your neck, shoulders, ribcage and pelvis move together, identifying postural or movement compensations that may be driving your discomfort.
Targeted Myofascial & Deep Tissue Work for Immediate Relief
We release restrictions in the cervical spine, trapezius, levator scapulae, suboccipitals, and especially the anterior neck muscles that most therapists aren’t well trained for and that provide the most immediate relief, the SCM and the scalenes—while also addressing tension patterns in the hips, back, and shoulders—to provide immediate relief in Session 1 and improve alignment.
Progressive Plan That Builds on Each Session
As pain subsides, we integrate work through the entire body—ribcage, low back, hips, legs, and even feet—to reinforce balanced posture and ensure the neck can function without strain. This whole-body approach follows the Rolfing-inspired principle that every joint plane influences the next.
What to Expect
A Progressive Plan

Frequently Asked Questions
Have more questions? Get in touch
Why does my neck hurt even when I’m not moving it?
Chronic neck pain is often related to postural tension and compensations throughout the upper body, not just the neck itself. Tightness in the shoulders, ribs, or jaw can keep neck muscles under constant strain.
Do I need a doctor’s note for neck pain massage?
No. Under NYS Title VIII licensure (see NY Board of Education FAQ #28), massage therapists can assess whether your symptoms are safe for massage. We refer out only when necessary.
What makes Bodyworks DW’s approach different?
We go beyond local treatment. Our therapists examine how your neck interacts with the rest of your body—especially your ribcage, hips, and even feet—to resolve the true source of strain and create lasting change.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients notice improvement after 1-2 sessions, with long-term postural and movement changes solidifying after 3-6.
Are there precautions for neck pain massage?
Yes — recent injuries, acute inflammation, fever/illness, or medications affecting tissue integrity require caution.
