Causes
What’s Going On With Lower Back Pain?
- The lower back supports most of your body’s weight and can experience forces up to 2× your body weight during simple movements like bending or lifting. (Rohlmann et al., 2014)
- Imbalances between the core, glutes, and hamstrings often place uneven strain on the lumbar spine.
- Long hours of sitting shorten hip flexors and compress the lower back, sometimes causing pain that radiates into the hips or legs.
- These compensations can also influence posture through the ribcage, shoulders, and neck.
At Bodyworks DW, we treat lower back pain as part of a full-body movement pattern. Whether the cause is sitting, lifting, or stress, we restore space, mobility, and circulation across the entire chain so you can move more freely and confidently—using the same integrated methods developed by David Weintraub, LMT.
How we treat
How Bodyworks DW Treats Lower Back Pain

The lower back is supported by a complex web of muscles that connect the spine, hips, and ribcage, all of which must work together for healthy movement and posture. Anatomy Plate (Gray’s, 1918)
Whole-Body Evaluation
We start with a brief intake and movement check to identify what’s really causing your pain—tight hip flexors, limited thoracic mobility, or weak glutes—so we can target the root causes efficiently.
Targeted Deep Tissue & Myofascial Work for Immediate Relief
We use advanced deep tissue and myofascial techniques to relieve pressure on the lumbar spine and hips, including but not limited to work on the quads, glutes, hamstrings, spinae erectors, pectorals, and trapezius with the goal of providing immediate relief in Session 1 and creating space for proper alignment.
Progressive Plan That Builds on Each Session
Once pain begins to ease, we expand the focus to include related structures—hips, ribcage, neck, and especially your feet and ankles, which are often a main source of back pain—to build on your progress and help it stick long-term, while teaching you easy self-care tools to maintain results.
What to Expect
A Progressive Plan
Session 1
Reduce chronic tension patterns in key muscles like the QL, glutes, and hip flexors. Expect to stand taller and move easier right away.
Sessions 2–4
Integrate feet, knees, hips, ribcage, and shoulders mechanics to balance spinal movement and restore natural core engagement.
Sessions 5–8+
Reinforce and reintegrate new posture and mobility patterns throughout the whole body. Along the way you’ll learn quick home care awareness and self care practices to prevent flare-ups and keep your back healthy long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have more questions? Get in touch
What causes most lower back pain?
The majority of back pain comes from muscle imbalances, limited hip or ribcage mobility, and poor postural habits—not just spinal issues.
Do I need a doctor’s note for lower back pain massage?
No. Under NYS Title VIII licensure (see NY Board of Education FAQ #28), massage therapists can assess whether your symptoms are safe for massage. We refer out only when necessary.
What makes Bodyworks DW’s approach different?
We go beyond treating the pain site. Our approach connects the lower back to the true root causes that many PTs and surgeons overlook—like an old ankle sprain or ACL injury that’s been changing how you move for years. These hidden patterns can cause your hips to lock up and your lumbar spine to overwork. By addressing them, our clients often achieve lasting relief even when standard treatments such as PT, cortisone, or surgery provided only short-term improvement or none at all.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients notice measurable improvement within 2–4 visits, and lasting change within 5–8.
Are there precautions for lower back pain massage?
Yes — recent injuries, acute inflammation, fever/illness, or medications affecting tissue integrity require caution.
