Massage for Hip Pain Relief in NYC

When hip pain throws your whole body off, it’s rarely just about the hips. Our licensed medical massage therapists specialize in finding the root causes—often hidden in how your ankles, pelvis, and ribcage move together—and restoring balance that lasts.

  • Available in FiDi & Midtown West – open 7 days a week

Causes

What’s Going On With Upper Back Pain?

  • The hip is one of the most complex and influential joints in the body. It supports your full upper-body weight, moves in three major planes, and in a single-leg stance can bear 2.3–2.9× your body weight. (NIH NCBI).
  • When it’s restricted, your whole movement system compensates.
  • Tight hip flexors or weakened glutes can cause strain in the low back — for example, altered gluteus medius activation patterns predicted low back pain in 76% of subjects in one study. (PubMed)
  • In addition, this limited hip rotation can also cause the knees, ankles, or even shoulders to move in unnatural ways.

At Bodyworks DW, we see hip pain as part of a larger movement pattern—not just a local issue. Whether it comes from long sitting, overtraining, or old injuries, our goal is to reconnect your hips to the body’s natural rhythm. We restore space, mobility, and circulation through the hips and surrounding regions so you can move more comfortably and confidently.

How we treat

How Bodyworks DW Treats Hip Pain

Anatomical illustration, lateral hip and thigh showing gluteal and thigh muscles and the iliotibial band to the knee

The hip is comprised of multiple layers of muscle tissue at different depths and in different directions. Due to its complexity, deep tissue work on the hip requires precision to be effective–not pure pressure. Anatomy Plate (Braus 1921)

  • Whole-Body Evaluation

A brief intake and movement check to find what’s driving your hip pain—tight hip flexors, limited ankle mobility, or ribcage tension—so we can maximize hands‑on time.

  • Targeted Myofascial & Deep Tissue Work for Immediate Relief

Targeted deep tissue and myofascial techniques release tension around the hips—psoas, glutes, TFL, and fascia—with the goal of immediate relief in Session 1.

  • Progressive Plan That Builds on Each Session

After initial relief, we create a plan to build on that progress, teaching you tools to manage flare‑ups and working through connected areas (ankles, ribcage, shoulders, neck) for lasting results.

  • What to Expect

    A Progressive Plan

    Session 1

Immediate relief and noticeable change in mobility and comfort.

    Sessions 2–3

Address related areas (ankles, pelvis, ribcage, opposite shoulder) to reinforce alignment and movement patterns.

    Sessions 4–8

Build lasting stability through whole-body integration and self-care strategies to keep the pain from returning.

    Care

Home Care That Helps Between Sessions

Our goal isn’t to overwhelm you with a list of complicated rehab exercises. We’ll teach you a few simple self‑care techniques—easy enough to remember and realistic to actually do—that make a real difference between sessions. Over time, you’ll build a small toolkit you can rely on to keep progress going and manage flare‑ups when they happen.

For example, here’s a short video from our YouTube library that demonstrates a simple hip mobility reset you can start using right away

    What Our Clients Say

“After months of hip pain from sitting at my desk, I could barely walk without stiffness. My therapist at Bodyworks DW worked not just on my hips, but also on my ankles and ribs—things I’d never connected before. Within a few sessions, everything moved together again.”

    Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions? Get in touch

    • Why do my hips hurt if I haven’t injured them?

Most hip pain comes from long-term overuse and compensation patterns—tight hip flexors, weak glutes, or even foot and ribcage mechanics that pull the joint out of alignment. Undoing these patterns take time and relearning new patterns…which can only happen if an objective source can point out the misaligned pattern to begin with and guide you towards a more efficient and easier way of moving.

    • Do I need imaging or a doctor's release before receiving massage?

No. Under NYS Title VIII licensure (see NY Board of Education FAQ #28), massage therapists can assess whether your symptoms are safe for massage. We refer out only when necessary.

    • What makes Bodyworks DW’s approach different?

We don’t chase pain. Our method integrates hips with the rest of your movement system, based on the same framework we teach in our professional training programs.

    • How many sessions will I need?

Most clients feel noticeable improvement in 2–4 sessions, with longer-term structural change developing over 5–8 sessions.

    • Are there precautions for hip pain massage?

Yes — recent injuries, acute inflammation, fever/illness, or medications affecting tissue integrity require caution.
